GDANSK ART BIENNALE

Gdansk Art Biennale is a review of art in the form of an open competition addressed to artists connected with the city. As a part of the event, there is an open submission of entries, and the Board of Experts selects the most interesting works presented during the competition exhibition. The jury comprises eminent curators, critics and heads of top exhibition institutions. The event is curated by Grażyna Tomaszewska-Sobko.

The first edition of Gdansk Art Biennale, which took place in 2010, was a national event. It was a thematic exhibition entitled Tożsamość Miejsca [Identity of the Place]. The jury of the first stage of the competition included Iwona Bigos, Adrianna Majdzińska, Marek Model, Stanisław Szwechowicz, Grażyna Tomaszewska-Sobko, Czesław Tumielewicz, and Małgorzata Żerwe. The jury of the second stage: Rafał Jakubowicz, Paweł Jarodzki, and Jarosław Lubiak unanimously selected GAB’s laureate – Dorota Nieznalska’s sculpture Królowa Polski [Queen of Poland]. A solo exhibition of the winner, entitled Miasto Zdarzenia Rekonstrukcje [City Events Reconstructions] was held at Gdansk City Gallery 2 from 26.08.2011 until 30.09.2011.

The second edition of GAB has permanently narrowed its reach to Pomeranian Voivodship.

The jury of the first stage was composed of Jarosław Denisiuk, Janusz Janowski, Piotr Józefowicz, and Edyta Wolska. The jury of the second stage: Dorota Monkiewicz, Karol Sienkiewicz, and Agata Zbylut, unanimously selected Elvin Flamingo’s work Dwaj ludzie z napisem Sopot [Two People and the Sopot Sign]. The winner’s exhibition entitled Symbiotyczność tworzenia [Symbiosity of Creation] was held at Gdansk City Gallery 1 between 26.09.2014 and 02.11.2014.

The third edition of GAB maintained the restriction of its reach to Pomeranian Voivodship.

The jury of the first stage was composed of Iwona Bigos, Jarosław Denisiuk, Janusz Janowski, Piotr Józefowicz, and Małgorzata Zwolicka-Taraszkiewicz. The jury of the second stage: Piotr Krajewski, Karolina Plinta, and Andrzej Wasilewski selected Zuzanna Golińska’s painting installation Chórzyści [Choir Members]. The winner’s exhibition entitled Common Ground was held at Gdansk City Gallery 1 between 26.08.2016 and 23.09.2016.

The fourth edition of GAB maintained the restriction of its reach to Pomeranian Voivodship. The Board of Experts of the first stage was composed of Karina Dzieweczyńska, Piotr Józefowicz, Agata Nowosielska, Piotr Stasiowski, and Edyta Wolska. The jury of the second stage: Krzysztof Polkowski, Sławomir Marzec, and Monika Weychert-Waluszko selected Martyna Jastrzębska’s installation Bajki Starego Kontynentu vol 1 [Fairy Tales of the Old Continent Vol. 1].

The fifth edition of GAB maintained the restriction of its reach to Pomeranian Voivodship. The Board of Experts of the first stage was composed of Joanna Dudek, Marta Gendera, Ewa Łączyńska-Widz, and Katarzyna Józefowicz. The jury of the second stage: Krzysztof Polkowski, Dorota Monkiewicz, and Waldemar Tatarczuk selected Agnieszka Piasecka’s work Epitafium [Epitaph].
