Beloved children, today they elected Gustav Heinemann president. With these words Günter Grass is opening his novel entitled From the Diary of a Snail. Putting on a storytelling air, through consecutive chapters he enters into a dialogue with his own children – Raoul, Franz, Laura and Bruno, picturing the old Gdańsk with its people in front of their eyes, as well as alluding to the current events taking place on the political arena of Germany and Europe. The title snail is the figure linking together the whole narrative, embodying slow but sensible progress on the way to reach one’s goal. The introduction of animal protagonists to his novels would often serve Grass the purpose of voicing more complicated, moralizing messages, just as it had been practiced before in fables by the masters of the genre, like Jean de la Fontaine or Ignacy Krasicki.
