ULTIMO? IS OUR WORLD HEADING FOR DESTRUCTION?
16 X 2019 – 19 X 2019
“ULTIMO? IS OUR WORLD HEADING FOR DESTRUCTION?” consisted of an academic show of The Rat including panel discussion and a walk along the literary route of the novel by Günter Grass and was completed in two stages.
The screening of fragments of The Rat (1997) took place on the anniversary of Günter Grass’ birthday, that is October 16th, within the premises of the University of Gdansk. It is worth mentioning that the screen version of this post-apocalyptic novel was some rarity for film connoisseurs, and this was the first time for it to be screened with Polish subtitles! The translation was prepared by German philology students under the guidance of Marta Turska, PhD, culture expert and translator.
Following the screening, the guests were invited to share their opinions during the discussion entitled: Ultimo? Is Our World Heading for Destruction?
On October 19th a thematic walk along Gdansk literary motifs from The Rat novel was organised. It was led by a licensed tour guide and PhD student of Gdańsk University, Anna Kowalewska-Mróz.
The concept of the event and modernisation of the discussion - Miłosława Borzyszkowska-Szewczyk, PhD, literary scholar and president of the Günter Grass Association in Gdansk.
