Festival rules: It is not allowed to bring in your own alcohol. Smoking is prohibited in the building.

The second edition of Grassmania Festival will take place on 16-18 September 2010 in an old shopping centre “Neptun” building in Gdansk Wrzeszcz. The building will soon be demolished, so the festival will be a symbolic “good bye” to this place. The festival is organized by Gdansk City Gallery and dedicated to work of Gdansk born Noble Prize winner Günter Grass. The title of the festival's second edition is “Time and Grass”- as time is a frequent topic in Grass's writing. We invited artists from Poland and Tricity representing different fields of art. The festival is taking place in Gdansk-Wrzeszcz, a district, where Günter Grass was born. All artists will confront the concept of time- in the context of their own work and the artistic work of Günter Grass.

Projects descriptions:

Podróże w miejscu
Emilia Orzechowska | Marcin Dymiter | Daniel Odija
Performance

How does the time pass when we are listening? How does it pass when we are reading? The performance is a mixture of literature and music. The participants (5-10 persons) will choose what do they want to listen to. They can pick from four positions ( by H.G. Wells, John Cage, Daniel Odija, T.S. Eliot). Each can be received differently, each requires different perception.

Honorata Martin
"Polowanie nocą na przeszłość wśród gruzów, nie do końca jeszcze martwych"
Installation

Honorata Martin will present an unusual installation that was inspired by the place, feeling, and time.

Ula Wasielewska
Installation

Ula Wasielewska  prepared a secret and surprising installation.

Adrianna Sitkiewicz
„Egosymulacja”/ Egosymulation
Installation

Adrianna Sitkiewicz will make a spider cocoon – a place of hibernation – where time has stopped during a temporary revitalisation of the abandoned shopping centre building. The building is brought to life just for a little while only to disappear later. Ones who enter the cocoon will face themselves in a mirror. We realise that the only stimuli that we can react to come from our inner self. We can see that we are condemned to exist in the world of our imagination.

Barbara Piórkowska
„Lumpeks poetycki”
Performance

Barbara Piórkowska – a poet, writer, journalist, literature critic and a performer. She will invite people to share their stories about their visits to “Neptun” shopping centre. The author will record or write the story down and later will create a new text out of all stories. The artist wants to free people from their memories, words and emotions and then check with the “story tellers” how does that make them feel.

"RYBENTRUP"
film

Screenplay, directing, editing: Michał Gos, Jagoda and Tomek Owczarek
Music: Michał Gos, Tomek Owczarek, Olo Walicki
Starring: Olo Walicki, Michał Gos, Jagoda Owczarek, Kamila Szelągowicz, Kuba Owczarek, Tomasz Nowaczyk, Tomasz Owczarek, Beata Czerepak

Rybentrup is an eclectic story about a young man haunted by his past. It's an absurd and schizoid story - with a criminal plot about an avenger fish.

Guitar Grass vs dj Jens
"600 bpm"
video-sonic performance

"600 bpm" is a hypnotic video-sonic performance presented by Guitar Grass and dj Jens. They will mix video projections, brake-core, trash and beats created with analogue and digital sound generators.

„CZASOLOT”
Sculpture-installation
Film: Kamila Chomicz
Sculpture- installation: Aleksandra Chomicz, Antonio Xavier
Centrum Edukacji Twórczej MIRORO

CZASOLOT is a unique time machine made of recycled materials. The artists also prepared a video: a series of interviews with 10-year old children, who took part in a workshop titled “Time in people and legends”.

Paweł „Paulus” Mazur
,,Widziano Güntera w mieście’’
Happening

During the happening a “Günter Grass” will appear in city's characteristic places. The happening will end during the last day of the Festival in front of the “Neptun” building.

Kasia Swinarska
„Dziś wolałabym siebie nie spotkać. Odsłona II”
Video, painting, texts, drawings

The artist wants to show how the time is assigned only by different masks that she puts on, her different incarnations.

Denis
„Cztery witryny – cztery ogrody”
Performance

The artist will turn four windows into black and white gardens made of ornaments, signs, symbols and words. This is a reference to the building that the Festival is taking place in- an old shopping centre, which used to be full of slogans, commercials, posters, logos, brands and numbers.

Dich singe ich, Demokratie / Opiewam Cię, Demokracjo
Günter Grass

Dich singe ich, Demokratie / Opiewam Cię, Demokracjo is a three-day artistic performance in which a group from Kultura Miejska / portal Wrzeszcz.info.pl will present Günter Grass as a person who was very active in politics.

„Panie i Panowie”
Alicja Karska and Aleksandra Went
Photographic installation

Alicja Karska and Aleksandra Went have been taking pictures of hairdresser salons' signs throughout Europe. The pictures will be shown at the windows of the building ( Grunwaldzka street).

Patrycja Orzechowska
ANTYKALENDARZ
Installation

Anti-calendar is a limited edition 12-pages calendar, but it is not a regular one. The artist was inspired by empty, abandoned offices where she'd found old calendars from last ten years. Anti-calendar is made of pictures of old calendars and shows dates from the past, which makes it totally useless and senseless.

GDAŃSK 2000
Concert

The band will play music with texts of  Günter Grass. GDAŃSK 2000 are Maciej Lubieniecki – (trumpet) Paweł „Paulus” Mazur – (generators, vocal, self-made instruments) and Kacper Ołowski.

Prawatt
Concert

Prawatt are: Jachi – the founder of the band, and automatic percussion constructor), Karol Schwarz (guitar, vocal, generators) and Szymon Albrzykowski (turntables, generators). They will play improvised experimental music ( analogue only, no computers).
